`Why` Send a Thank-You Note after the Holidays

Written By: Sandi MacCalla ~ 1/2/2023

What better expression of holiday spirit than a handwritten thank-you note? Now don’t start running the message through your mind that you still need to catch your breath after the holidays! As with most life skills, a strategy of this social-must has easier options than in the past.

The basic format of thank-you notes is to express your gratitude, mention the specific thing you are thanking the person for, and include a brief message of appreciation or well wishes.

There are a few key things to keep in mind when writing a thank-you note.

  • Make it personal.
    • A thank-you note is written in your own words and should reflect your personal style and tone.

  • Be timely.
    • It's best to send a thank-you note as soon as possible afterwards while it’s still fresh in your mind. At the most, send it within two weeks.

  • Be brief.
    • Thank-you notes do not have to be long or elaborate. Well-chosen sentiments are sufficient.

  • Be specific.
    • Mention the specific gift or act of kindness that you are thanking the person for and how it made you feel.

  • Use proper etiquette.
    • Include appropriate salutations and closing phrases in your thank-you note. "Dear [Name]" and "Sincerely" are both options.

In recent years, it has become common to send thank-you notes electronically, either via email or through a messaging app. This can be a convenient and efficient way to send a quick note of thanks, especially if you are sending a thank-you to a large group of people.

However, handwritten thank-you notes are still considered more personal and thoughtful, and are more appropriate for close friends, family, or business associates. Take the extra effort to handwrite these when you are cultivating a relationship.
